The Mirage

The Mirage” is the first ever Modern Dance theatre started by RSU DC and is among the very few dance theatres in South India, with an objective to spread awareness and the style across the country. A theatre includes dance styles like Modern Dance, Postmodern Dance, Contemporary, Jazz and Tap.

During the 1900s, American and European dancers began to rebel against the rigid constraints of classical ballet. Modern dance pioneers focused more on creative self-expression rather than fixed, technical rules of classical ballet. Modern dance is more relaxed, where emotions are expressed and steps are designed according to them in contrast to ballet’s structured code of steps. Another characteristic of modern dance in opposition to ballet is the deliberate use of gravity. Whereas classical ballet dancers strive to be light and airy on their feet, modern dancers often use their body weight to enhance and improvise movements.

The choreographies in “The Mirage” include techniques and improvisations adopted from modern dance forms across the globe, such as Butoh (Japanese Modern Dance) and Tanz (Introduced by Pina Bauch) as well as concepts and ideas evolved by research, exploration and creativity. Lighting, sound effects, music are carefully chosen to blend with the choreography.
